SBO project with a primary societal finality: Developing training tools for explaining and reducing ethnic discrimination in the fields of education, health care, housing and labour

This project develops training tools for explaining and reducing ethnic discrimination in the fields of education, health care, housing and labour (Edistools). After consultation of a broad range of stakeholders, and informed by a thorough review of the literature on ethnic discrimination in these four domains, this study aims to develop flexible, easy-to-use and interactive education tools that can be used in various learning contexts with both students (e.g. student-realtors, student-physicians…) and professionals (e.g. realtors, teachers and physicians) to: 1) Increase awareness and understanding of the various forms of discrimination and its inter-related and context-depended nature. 2) Empower individual service providers to deal with the different causes of their (potentially) discriminatory behaviour and. 3) Offer opportunities for selfassessment of service providers, some categories of clients and organizations as a whole to become less discriminatory through knowledge development and self-assessment.

This project builds on existing research in four different, independent domains by investigating the relationships between discriminatory behaviour, intentions, conscious or unconscious attitudes and/or personality traits; and to explore how these elationships between these individual characteristics differ according to context (e. g. features of schools and health–care organizations) and domains. Different forms of data collection and analysis will be used to understand these relationships within and between these different contexts and domains; including: correspondence tests and (video) observations for measuring behaviour, mystery calling and interviews for measuring discriminatory intentions, questionnaires for measuring attitudes and psychological tests for measuring unconscious attitudes and personality traits. The same forms of data, but analysed in triangulation, will allow us to analyse the importance of social contexts within and between domains .
