Search for Fractionally Charged Particles: from Ice and Earth

Description

The Standard Model intrinsically does not constrain the elementary charge of particles. However,
experimentally only particles with a zero or integer multiples of a constant electric charge have been
observed.
This imposes the persistent question of whether particles with a fractional value of the electric charge
exist or
not. In this proposal we lay down the goals and methodology to search for fractionally charged
particles within
the context of astroparticle physics, using IceCube, and within collider physics, with CMS and
milliQan. These
fractionally charged particles could also help to shed light on the dark matter mystery, as they could
provide a
portal to a hidden sector beyond the standard model of particle physics.
