Sociaaleconomische gezondheidsverschillen in het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest: onderzoek naar de impact van onderwijs en nationaliteit van oorsprong bij jongeren en jongvolwassenen.

Project Details

This project aims at obtaining insight into the impact of education and nationality of origin on inequalities in health among adolescents and young adults in the Brussels-Capital Region (BCR). Tackling social inequalities in health is one of the main challenges of health policy, but in its domain inequalities among youngsters is understudied. The BCR renders itself quite well for this research, as the young population has grown steadily the last decades, and consists of large groups of foreign descent. The first aim of this project is to quantify the relation between education, nationality of origin and health/mortality in this region. The second aim is to find explanations for these relations, through looking into the causes of death, lifestyle factors, environmental factors, etc. Both the Census of 2001 linked to the mortality data of 2001-2005 for the BCR and the Health Surveys of 1997, 2001, 2004 and 2008 are used. The ultimate goal is to offer inspiration for the development of practical measures to improve the health of the population of Brussels.
