We are able to classify patients withe CFS into two groups. - a "first-phase-group": patients in the initial phase of illness, in which there is a loss of body weight, despite normal caloric intake. - a "second-phase-group": patients in a eriod of illness, in which an increase in body weight is observed even though there are no changes in eating habits. A first part of our study will consist in the measurement of resting basal metabolic rate in both previously described groups and the comparison of results with those of an age-matched and sex-matched normals control group, a groups with anorexia nervosa and a group with obesity. This experiment is taking place in cooperation with the University of Maastricht who puts the necessary equipment at our disposal. Different energy estimates are available; 1. sleeping metabolic rate (SMR), determined in a respiration chamber 2. resting metabolic rate (RMR), determined with a ventilated hood 3. average daily metabolic rate (ADMR) determined with simple labelled water.
