Tensional space and creativity.

    Project Details

The objective of this research project is to investigate what one could call 'an archeology of tensional space' in literature and poetry, and moreover in creative and artistic forms of experience in general. The first year the concept of space is studied according to the phenomenological points of view, more specifically to the work of Husserl, Heidegger, Bachelard, Merleau-Ponty and Ingarden. The second year the conceptions of language are being analysed with reference to the experience of space in the semiotic theories of Eco, Greimas and Fontanille. The third year the possibility of an application of the concept 'tensional space' is examined and its characteristics are being determined on the basis of the poetical work of Verhaeren, Maeterlinck and Cocteau. The last year these results are being compared with an analysis of the 'tensional space' in the artistic criticism of Verhaeren, in the illustrations of Minne and Spilliaert to the work of Maeterlinck and in the graphic work of Cocteau.
