Description

1. Am
The focus of the project is twofold. First and foremost the Jean Cocteau's Oeuvres poetiques completes (1999) has given us information about text variations, which have not been taken up in the critical edition because of lack of space. Since the current emphasis of publi:::ists is concentrated on so called 'significant variances' - those that concem the content and theme aspects of poetry, other variances Ike linguistic, metri::: and visual are left behind. Because of this, there is an incomplete and disjointed representation of the poetic genesis. Secondly, the intemational colloquium "Editer la pcesie", that was organised in collaboration with the ULB in Odober 2003, has raised the necessity for a new criti:::al way to publish poetry. The focus should not be solely on all registers of poetic art in which variances occur (fonetic soundmatrixes, metrum, morfo-syn taxis, spatialisation, typographic components, ... ), but also on different "campagnes d'ecriture" or writing sessions in which recurring changes appear who govem all these registers and subsequently can offer valuable information with regard to the interpretatbn of the texts. This way n-eaning and understanding is not based on the final text but on the evolution between the different text versions.
2. Objectives
The objective of this project is to build a totally newtype of critical publication for poetry. This requires a complementary and interdisciplinary approach. First and foremost there is the technichnical aspect which requires the construction of a digital database. This database will provide access to all poems in all versions, from first draft to final print, and will albw people to study all phases and registers of poetic creatbn. The textcritical research shows the complex evolution of poetical creativity. This is done via an analysis of the total inforrration that is extracted through studying the variances and their interactions. Not only will the technical and critical approach of the text run in parallel the synergy as a result of this will offer an expansive eernent in the global execution of the project. The result of the project will be accessible through a web site and DVD support.
