Project Details

Description

This study focuses on the demilitarisation of the Belgian gendarmerie. This remarkable phenomenon is the focus of a conceptual study. The central research-question are about the implication of this law for the military character of this police-force and the reason of the changement in 1992. To find the answer we construct a continuum consisting of two police-models : the military police-force and the civilian police-force. This typology makes possible the study of the military character of any police-force.Central within our study is the analysis of the internal social organisation ( the recruitment , the training , unionism etc.) the operational task-accomplishment and the control and government over the police-force.The purpose of this study is to explain the impact of this law on the demilitarisation by means of postioning the gendarmerie between 1957 and 1997 on the constucted continuum.
