A neurocognitive theory of higher mental emergence: From anoetic affective experiences to noetic knowledge and autonoetic awareness

Abstract

This essay provides an overview of levels of consciousness, with a focus on the higher neural processing--from noetic to autonoetic functions that permits conscious awareness to be based on raw affective feelings that constitute an anoetic form of consciousness. An abundance of mind-brain linkages have been established using standard neuropsychological and brain-imaging procedures. Much of the characterization of the mental landscape has been achieved with long accepted psychometric procedures that often do not adequate tap the lived experiential aspects of mind. At present, perhaps the most critical level of experimental analysis, a fuller scientific characterization of the human mind, has yet to be achieved. Still, methodologies that give us a partial view, based on standard psychological procedures, are beginning to give us a feel for the structure-function complexities that may provide a solid foundation for future developments.
