Abstract
This report collects the input from business cases originating from different industrial sectors (logistics, retail, healthcare, utilities) in order to appraise how the inclusion of sensor networks alters the business ecosystem. Topics addressing the creation of new roles or the change of roles in terms of responsibility and the shift in control are analysed. One of the core research questions is the description of different scenarios where the coordinating role can be adopted by different actors.
Investigation of the role of telecommunication companies reveals the potential of a new stakeholder. Business value network scenarios are thus described, varying from telecom service providers acting as passive connectivity providers for VPNs, via data aggregation and processing services provision, to deployment of end-to-end solutions.
This research also considers alternatives to a centrally controlled sensor network and the creation of an open middleware platform to other sensor networks from a business point of view.
