"Afghanistan: Reflections on Press Freedom & Responsible Journalism": Self-orientalism by Afghan media and estranging an audience

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterResearchpeer-review

Abstract

The mainstream Afghan media have embraced the American invention of War on Terror in their coverage of the war between 2001 and 2021. This created unnecessary conflict; it estranged the audiences in their country, and it also antagonised political groups. Western journalism should not be seen as the ultimate tool for independent reporting. Awareness of biases and flaws in Western journalism is essential.
