Abstract

Departing from the survey and project which led to my earlier publication "The Second Sound" (together with Lee De Graeve), this book chapter explains the further development which helped to shape the research question around the notion of quality in music that is the core of my PhD research. The chapter focusses on the philosophy of Hannah Arendt and the importance of judgement which she has developed, held against questions of gender and the canon as phrased by musicologists Susan McClary and Marcia Citron.
