'Art, Capitalism and Resistance'

Dieter Lesage

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

May 1968 constituted such an enormous infringement of the belief in the capitalist system that capitalism itself was forced to review Fordist philosophy. If capitalism is still standing today, it is entirely thanks to the way it has succeeded in boosting this system since then. Far from being entirely superfluous at the end of history, artistic commitment has itself become the model for all forms of labour in the capitalist system. Far from art being a purely formalistic supplement to capitalist liberal democracy, capitalism has discovered in artistic commitment a spiritual supplement or supplément d'âme.
