Abstract

Battery runtime, I-V characteristics and other performances at different operating conditions are
crucial in portable electronics especially in Electrical Vehicles (EVs). With an accurate and efficient
battery models it can be predict and optimize battery performance especially under practical
runtime usage such as Battery Management Systems (BMS). Two of the famous battery models are
Thevenin battery model and the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV) or
FreedomCAR model.

The paper represents a new method for parameters estimation using Matlab/Simulink parameter
estimation, for the premonition two battery models. The paper also suggests a modification for
PNGV battery. Lithium Polymer (Li-Po) KOKAM 12Ah battery is tested by specific standard tests
done on the battery at different State of Charge (SoC), temperature and current rate. The paper
compares the parameters estimated PNGV stander spreadsheet method (only for PNGV battery
model) and using Matlab/Simulink parameter estimation blockset, which is fast, easy, useful and
powerful tool also it can used for any battery model.
