Abstract

This paper aims to present an essay proposal regarding the myth of the Gorgon, based on Ovid’s text, The Metamorphoses, exposing his existence condition as a tragic one. We chose Ovid’s text with the intention to determine the origin of this investigation, since, according to several researchers who have taken up this subject, determining the origin of the Medusa is a barren and almost impossible path to es-tablish due mainly to the diversity of historical, archaeological and iconographic doc-uments. However, the scope of the essay is to engage with the myth bringing out the image of the Medusa as a tragic heroine, displacing her from her supporting role in the myth of the Argive hero Perseus, to the lead role, thus establishing an ouroborotic cycle that had its beginning and its end in the action of the very own goddess of war and wisdom, the goddess Athena.
