Abstract

An outpatient sample of extra-familial child molesters (N = 124) was classified by three independent raters using a checklist (De Doncker & Koeck, 2003) derived from the original MTC:CM3 criteria (Knight, Carter & Prentky, 1989). Fair to substantial inter-rater reliability coefficients were obtained and some support was found for the construct validity of the classification system.
A second part of this study, to be published in a future issue of this journal, mainly considers adjustments that were
made to some of the criteria. These resulted in a new checklist, the SCEP-1 (De Doncker, Koeck, Huys & Winter, 2005).
This instrument contains criteria that are less subjective and better adjusted to the specificity of an outpatient population.
