Co-design Optimization Framework for Electrified Buses in Cities: Brussels Case Study

Abstract

Recently, there is a strong trend towards sustainable e-mobility in order to reduce the environmental impact of transport. Nowadays, electric buses are promising alternative solutions to replace the conventional diesel buses in public transport and to improve the air quality thanks to their zero-tail pipe emissions. However, the major challenges of these technologies are the battery systems (in terms of cost, design and sizing, lifetime, state-of-charge, etc.), charging infrastructure (in terms of location, charging power, charging time, charging scenarios and cost) and bus autonomy. Therefore, in this paper, a co-design optimization framework based on simulation design tool is developed to select the proper battery technology (in terms of chemistry, capacity, voltage, etc.) taking into account its lifetime constraints and to provide the best charging scenario (i.e. Overnight charging or Opportunity charging) and charging management strategy (in terms of charging power and time) for dedicated bus-lines in Brussels city. These bus-lines have been selected by STIB company (bus operator in Brussels) in the framework of an EU project, called ELIPTIC. Furthermore, this paper provides a thorough technical assessment of those electrified buses and their possible integration into the existing tram and underground electric infrastructure.
