Abstract

Platform firms alike traditional firms do not operate in isolation but within an ecosystem of interrelated firms. Yet, platforms follow a different economic logic than traditional firms. As a result, their ecosystem diverges from the ecosystem of traditional firms as well. This paper explores how platform firms compete in their specific ecosystem. Firstly, we introduce the new theoretical concept of multi-layered platform networks to address the platform-specific ecosystems. Multi-layered platforms are characterised by horizontal (intra-layer), vertical (inter-layer) and ecosystem (cross-layer) dynamics, which every platform firm has to take into account when exploring its strategic competitive options. Secondly, we introduce a platform network competition matrix operationalising the theoretical concept of multi-layered platform networks, to enable an empirical assessment of a platform firm's competitive behaviour in different market situations.
