Composition: Edokaste, for Cello and Piano

Peter Swinnen (Composer)

Research output: Non-textual formComposition

Abstract

This composition, based on a poem by John Keats, builds on several algorithms developed for the Messiaen reflected project and for my PhD piece "La Chute de la maison Usher", trying to test their validity if applied to text material. The harmonic evolution of the piece is based on a metric maker cf. la Chute, but the harmonic rhythm and the curve of the morphing % are defined by resp. the character widths of, and the value-changes algorithm applied to, the original Keats text. The melodic material is generated by the melody-maker, cluster-maker and /or shifting-pattern-maker from "la Chute", combined with gestures obtained by an image-synthesizer applied on Keats' text.
