Abstract

This chapter considers the possible directions of the field of NSSI research in the future. It details the development of the NSSI field that started from a diverse array of unaligned terms and measures of self-injury. The epidemiological outlines of NSSI presented several notions over the past 20 years, which include the recognition of NSSI as a clinical disorder and the relationship between NSSI and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Moreover, future research could also look into themes of populations, lived experiences, operationalization, assessment of NSSI, novel research methods, and bio-neuro processes. The chapter also explores themes correlated with prevention, intervention, and treatment.
