Cultivation of Datura Species for Scopolamine and Hyoscyamine Production in Burundi

Abstract

In this study, alkaloid content in three different Datura stramonium L. varieties (stramonium, tatula, inermis) cultivated in Burundi, and the effect of adding minerals and manure were investigated as well as the influence of thinning out and indirect sowing. When relating the results obtained for the leaves, similar effects of fertilization on biomass production and on hyoscyamine content were found, this for the three varieties. Highest content was obtained with the mineral treatment (highest N-dose) for the var. tatula. Indirect sowing and thinning out led to a retardment of the growth and was associated with a slower increase in hyoscyamine content. The scopolamine content was inversely related with biomass increase. Highest contents were obtained with the var. stramonium when sown indirectly or thinned out.
