Er kan gesteld worden dat de normalisaties van systemen de spiegels vormen van technologische en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen.
De behoefte aan normalisatie is niet nieuw en heeft een boeiende weg afgelegd. Historisch onderzoek op dit gebied is waardevol maar niet relevant in de ingenieursomgeving. De relevantie voor de huidige evolutie wordt veelal miskend.
