Abstract
The project was designed as longitudinal intervention study guided by the principles of emancipatory action research, and implemented in nine stages following the Precede-Proceed model developed by Green & Kreuter for the systematic development and evaluation of health education and promotion. The study included inter alia a hospital self-assessment and pre- and post- intervention assessment of hospital staff satisfaction and HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes and behavior. Activities were developed based on initial needs assessment with regard to health promotion for hospital staff and patients, and were guided by intervention mapping and program design, including promoting a shared vision, providing leadership and organizing empowerment workshops, supported by institutionalization of the concept through introducing formal policies, systems and structures. Activities are planned through regular committee meetings supervised by a project leader, and are fully integrated in the quality assurance program. A forum has also been established with community stakeholders in order to develop networking and outreach activities.
