Abstract

This R2.5 report establishes a comprehensive conceptual and pedagogical framework for the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Sports Education (STEM Sports Education) project. It synthesizes critical insights derived from a multi-faceted approach, including a review of national curricula and relevant literature (A2.2), perspectives gathered from local forums (A2.3), and consortium strategic agreements on thematic subjects and learning outcomes (A2.4), all refined through discussions within Activity 2.5. The framework's core components include: A strong emphasis on inclusivity to boost the participation of all students, particularly girls and underrepresented groups, alongside a commitment to actively overcome traditional disciplinary boundaries between STEM and PE. The identification of five key umbrella themes highly relevant for integrating STEM and Physical Education (PE) in secondary education (12-15-year-old students), selected with careful consideration of national curricula, context, and the promotion of gender-neutral activities. A comprehensive framework defining learning outcomes (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) for STEM Sports Education, aligned with the project’s core values of inclusion, diversity, sustainability, and social justice. Pragmatic design principles for Teaching and Learning Sequences (TLSs), encompassing agreements on duration, a flexible modular structure, and clear categories for content inclusion (Compulsory, Recommended, Optional). These principles directly address practical implementation challenges like time constraints and enhance adaptability. This pedagogical framework provides a shared understanding and a coherent roadmap for the project's subsequent phases. It will serve as the definitive blueprint for Work Package 3 (Toolkit activities), guiding the development of high-quality, adaptable, and inclusive TLSs by dictating content, structuring materials, and ensuring embedded learning outcomes. Concurrently, for Work Package 4 (Teacher Training Program), the framework will provide foundational content, ensuring training directly addresses identified challenges, equips educators with innovative methodologies, and promotes effective strategies for fostering positive attitudes and inclusivity in the classroom. All in all, this framework forms a robust and actionable foundation, instrumental in guiding the successful design and implementation of the STEM Sports Education project.
