We have designed and implemented a platform independent computer-based digital oscilloscope using a high performance 32-bit RISC microcontroller. The oscilloscope program makes use of very low software and hardware cost, and uses recursive formulas (e.g. recursive averaging, variance) in a platform independent object oriented environment with stable and deterministic computing time. This means that, if evaluated on-line, confidence limits can also be displayed. It can be seen from the measurements that the recursive formulas accomplish the required sample number independent output
