Abstract

We investigate 2D rebinning algorithms for TOF-PET in which rebinning is performed separately for each axial plane parallel to the axis of the scanner, as in the TOF-SSRB method proposed by Mullani and Mooses. The goal of this work is to develop rebinning algorithms that are more accurate than TOF-SSRB. Two approaches are explored. The first one is an analytically exact method based on a partial differential equation that expresses a consistency condition for TOF-PET data with a Gaussian TOF profile. The second second approach is discrete: each 2D TOF-LOR is calculated as a linear combination of the 3D TOF-LOR
with same $(s,\phi)$. The coefficients of the linear combination are pre-computed by optimizing a cost function which enforces
both accuracy and good variance reduction, models the TOF profile, the axial PSF of the LORs, and the specific axial sampling scheme.
