There is a significant interest in predicting the corrosion behavior of aluminum which is a widely used primary metal in commerce. Aluminum exhibits high corrosion resistance due to the presence of a protective oxide layer that is strongly bonded to its surface. Although this oxide barrier has high regenerative properties and if it is damaged it is reformed immediately, it is susceptible to localized corrosion when brought into contact with an aqueous solution containing halide ions, such as chloride (Cl-). A common type of localized corrosion manifested by formation of pits when the protective oxide layer is breached is called pitting corrosion.
