Abstract

A diversity policy within the police: who the f*ck benefits from it?

We live in a super-diverse society. However, the police do not seem to pick up on the attention for these social developments towards a super-diverse society, which puts them at risk of inefficiency and loss of legitimacy. In an exploratory quantitative study, we examined the state of affairs regarding diversity (policy) among the police in Belgium. The results of the quantitative survey are complemented with insights gained from in-depth interviews with police officers with a migration background. During the interviews, we investigated how this group of police officers experiences and perceives the diversity policy in place today. In addition, we wonder what the use and added value of a diversity policy can be and we initialise a debate on the need for a (super)diversity policy within the Belgian police.
