Abstract

This paper proposes a new charging strategy for megawatt charging stations that aims to optimize thermal management, thereby enhancing the efficiency of charging medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. The strategy employs a Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach to dynamically balance cooling energy and charging current, ensuring that battery temperatures remain below a specified threshold. The study compares the proposed approach with passive cooling and maximum power charging strategies across various charging scenarios to evaluate their efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that the MPC strategy can significantly improve energy efficiency and optimize charging times in high-power charging stations, making it a versatile solution for diverse operational needs.
