Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingMeeting abstract (Book)

Abstract

An important mission for both professional and amateur astronomers in the 21st century is to stimulate the interest in astronomy among young people in Flanders. For this purpose, the Flemish astronomical institutes and universities are undertaking action by working together in the organization of the first edition of the Flemish Astronomy Olympiad. This contest is aimed at students in their last years of secondary education and closely follows a similar concept recently introduced in the Netherlands. We give a short overview of the origins of the initiative, the organizational details of the ongoing first edition, and the ambitious plans for 2009, the International Year of Astronomy.
