Abstract

The objective of philosophy is the pursuit of wisdom itself. [Introduction] Contrary to other disciplines delineated in this book, philosophy lacks a preordained subject of study. This denotes that every topic and every action can be scrutinized from a philosophical standpoint. Hence, when querying about the subject of study in philosophy, it is more pertinent to revert to the inquiries philosophers pose - the so-called principal domains of philosophy (metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic, aesthetics) - and the diverse themes these inquiries pertain to, termed as subdomains. [1. Object of Study] In addition, philosophy does not subscribe to a singular method but accommodates a plurality of methods, which resonates with the other disciplines encapsulated in this book. Thus, anyone probing about the method of philosophy should contemplate (i) the methodologies employed by philosophers in specific philosophical movements (such as modern and contemporary philosophy), (ii) traditions (such as continental and analytical), (iii) the directives of eminent authors like Descartes, Kant, Heidegger, Foucault, and Wittgenstein, and (iv) the dynamics of academic discord.
