Financing Modernist Music: The Rise, Climax and Decline (1919-1936) of Modernist Music in Commercial Concert Societies in Brussels and Its Revival (1936-1940) at the Fully Subsidized National Radio Belgian Broadcasting Institute

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how modernist music was financed in Brussels in the interwar period (1919-1940). This research on modernist music is based on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of data collected and centralized in a database with approximately 5,000 records relating to Belgian modernism, including amongst others around 1,000 articles on musical modernism and around 2,000 Brussels concerts programming modernist music. In order to define modernism in Belgium, the following questions needed to be asked when analysing the articles on modernism of the cultural magazines of the interwar period: What is the concept or definition of «New or Modern Music» that music critics developed in the interwar period? How did this concept evolve? Which international composers were considered as «the leaders of the avant-garde»1? The concerts were then analysed using these definitions of modernism and the compositions of the living contemporary composers played in the concerts were divided into the three style categories of the interwar period: post- romanticism, post-impressionism and modernism2.
