Abstract

To the Editor: We were struck by the report of Pipeleers-Marichal et al. (March 15 issue)1 that the gastrinomas in eight patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN-1) and the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome were located in the proximal duodenum and periduodenal areas. In contrast, a recent report notes that in 9 of 14 resected pancreatic specimens from patients with the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and MEN-1, one or more gastrinomas were identified.2 Surprisingly, in both reports the gastrinomas were found in the region of the proximal duodenum and the head of the pancreas, an area that we have found to contain…
