Giant and tuneable Goos-Hänchen shifts at metamaterial interfaces

Abstract

By applying transformation optics to discontinuous interfaces, we are able to establish an analytical framework describing the reflection phenomena occurring at metamaterial interfaces. In particular, we derive an analytical model relating the magnitude of the Goos-Hänchen shift—a lateral shift of an electromagnetic beam upon total internal reflection—to the material parameters of the reflecting metamaterial medium. Choosing the appropriate permittivity and permeability tensors, giant GoosHänchen shifts can be obtained. With applications in sensing and switching in mind, we investigate the roles of anisotropy and impedance-matching, paving the way for physically realizable metamaterials exhibiting giant Goos-Hänchen shifts.
