Identifying innovation: A new typology for the creative industries

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterResearchpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter proposes a new typology of R&D-driven innovation for the creative industries. It categorises innovation journeys based on the direction of R&D efforts and the depth of learning involved (technocratic, incremental, conceptualising, disruptive). This framework highlights the value of diverse innovation approaches, each contributing to a vibrant creative innovation ecosystem. Recognising the co-existence of these innovation types fosters both refinement and exploration, as well as continuity and disruption. This framework departs from traditional models by focusing on the R&D process itself, making it more flexible and applicable to a wider range of creative endeavours. It encourages valuing diverse innovation outputs, not just those leading to immediate commercial success. The framework benefits various stakeholders. Businesses can use it to self-assess their innovation goals and identify areas for improvement. Researchers can leverage it to analyse innovation within creative industries. Policymakers can utilise it to tailor support mechanisms for different innovation types.
