Abstract

Bisi Adjapon is a Ghanaian Nigerian American writer and is part of a literary trend that addresses the new African diaspora in the USA in 21st-century fiction. Adjapon is the author of The Teller of Secrets (2021) (previously published in 2018 as Of Women and Frogs) and Daughter in Exile (2023). Over the course of her career, Adjapon has written for several journals and newspapers, established the Young Shakespeare Company in America, and served as an international affairs specialist for the US Foreign Agricultural Service. In this interview, Adjapon mainly focuses on her latest novel, Daughter in Exile, and its autobiographical elements and themes, such as religion and immigration in the USA. She also discusses her personal story, her writing style, her ideas about the freedom of creative writers to examine sexuality and feminism, her love of Shakespeare, and the significance of Adinkra symbols in Ghanaian society.
