Abstract

This fourth special issue of the Journal for Literary and Intermedial Crossings focuses on the literary, filmic and intermedial city portraits and the (real or imaginary) urban identities they evoke or create. The contributions to this special issue develop some of arguments originally presented at the seventh annual symposium of the Centre for Literary and Intermedial Crossings (CLIC), held at Vrije Universiteit Brussel on 10 November 2017. The eight articles, by ten scholars in literary and film studies, collectively give an impression of the linguistic, geographical and generic variety of city portraits (“portraits de ville”, “retratos de la ciudad”, “ritratti di città”, “stadsportretten”, “Städtebilder”) that have been drawn by artists over time.
