Abstract
Multilingualism should not be regarded as being a special case. Both on an institutional and on a personal level multilingualism is spread widely.
Why does it often seem exceptional? The EU sees multilingualism and cultural diversity as one of its defining features and propagates the acquisition of at least 2 foreign languages.
However, of 23 official languages, only 3 to 5 are used as working languages. How difficult is it to motivate people for foreign language learning? The case of Dutch in the officially bilingual, but in reality very multilingual city of Brussels is used as an example. In order to make foreign language learning more attractive and easier a number of didactic approaches have been developed recently.
