Motte and Church in Zealand and Frisia: a Comparative Approach

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference paper

Abstract

The Dutch provinces of Zealand and Frisia do not only share a common Early Medieval past as part of a North Sea culture, but also a wide distribution of motte castles in the 12th and 13th centuries. The paper presents the simularities and differences for these mottes in both provinces. Also the relationship to the local church foundation as a confirmed or possible initiative of the local nobleman (ambachtsheer/hoofdeling) on his motte.
