Abstract

This review article critically assesses two recent books on the famous city plans of Jacob van Deventer, the Stedenatlas Jacob van Deventer by Reinout Rutte en Bram Vannieuwenhuyze (2018) and Colin Dupont’s Cartographie et pouvoir au XVIe siècle. L’atlas de Jacques de Deventer (2019). After discussing both works, it compares the divergent views of their authors on a number of crucial aspects, including the genesis and purpose of Van Deventer’s city atlas, the relationship between the loose maps and the atlas maps, and the ‘legend’ of his maps. This comparison is enriched with insights from several other recent articles on the subject. Lastly this contribution also proposes new ideas for future research.
