Abstract

The scope of this study is to relate the acoustic activity of load induced damage in cross ply composites to the distinct failure mechanisms associated with these material systems. For this purpose cross ply glass fibre reinforced epoxy composites were subjected to incremental tensile loading with concurrent recording of the damage induced acoustic activity. AE parameters were successfully employed to monitor the gradual transition of the damage mechanism from transverse cracking (mode I) to delamination (mode II). Wave propagation studies in between loading steps revealed an increase in the relative amplitude of the propagated wave, which was attributed to the development of delamination that confined the wave to the top longitudinal plies of the composite.
