Abstract
The Multidisciplinary institute of Teacher Education (MILO) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel has in the past ten years developed expertise in how cto set up inquiry-based professional learning communities in schools (Research-based schools?!) in which pre-service teachers, in-service teachers, teacher educators and researchers together search for ways to improve the learning outcomes and learning processes of students, to improve teaching practice and enhance teachers' professionalism. The COLIBRU project (Collective Investigative school leadership in and around Brussels) builds on the expertise within the Research-based schools and aims to develop a flanking school leadership.Through practical research, school leaders experience in a learning community how the approach can contribute to their own professionalization and school empowerment.
