Abstract

In recent years, a number of innovative strategies have been introduced which enable long-term cultivation of primary hepatocytes that functionally reflect the hepatic in vivo situation. This opens promising perspectives for more accurate pharmaco-toxicological profiling of drug candidates, including detection of hepatotoxicity, during the early phases of drug development, which is yet a major pitfall encountered by pharmaceutical industry.
