Abstract

In this paper, we address regional strategy and performance in the global automotive industry. We briefly review two strands of literature that explain the limited geographical dispersion of multinational activity across industries. We then confront these theories with an original dataset from the automotive industry. After analysing this sample, we predict that competitive pressures will force firms in the automotive industry to increase further the size and scope of their foreign operations. The presence of firm-specific advantages explains the performance differences observed among the firms.
