Abstract
In a landmark decision, the European Commission on December 19 prohibited the so-called multilateral interchange fees (MIFs) that MasterCard charges for certain credit- and debit-card payments. Brussels gave MasterCard six months to drop the fees or face stiff penalties. Retailers greeted the decision as "an early Christmas present for consumers". However, whether society will benefit remains to be seen. A generalised ban on interchange fees would probably disturb a delicate balance in the market for payment cards.
