Recently, utilization of optimization in various practical applications has been drastically increased in the field of aerodynamics design optimization in various engineering disciplines. One of the latest developments in this field is the introduction of surrogates instead of computational fluid dynamics simulations. The main benefits of using surrogates are related to the computational cost, memory and time budgets. The present paper is intended to introduce the topic of surrogate-based optimization. An overview of the principal aspects of surrogates and the associated terminology is dealt with in detail. In addition, the paper provides a survey over the previous efforts in contributing in this field especially for shape optimization. The paper is finalized with some general recommendations as well as a brief summary to the widely used toolboxes.
