Abstract
Every day, Brussels – the heart of Europe – resounds with an impressive soundscape of more than a hundred languages. But which languages are most commonly heard? How multilingual are its residents? And what is the current position of Dutch amidst this growing linguistic diversity?
The Language Barometer offers a unique, scientifically grounded insight into Brussels’ complex and ever-evolving linguistic landscape. Based on the fifth edition of the Language Barometer survey – the only large-scale study of language in Brussels – the authors analyse how inhabitants use language at school, at work, at home, and in their social lives.
This edition pays particular attention to the evolving position of Dutch in a multilingual Brussels. As such, The Language Barometer is an indispensable reference for anyone seeking to better understand the societal reality of language in the capital.
