Abstract

This article analyses how PMCs give account for their actions and if this fulfills the traditional criteria of democratic control of armed force. The article maps the nodal accountability relations to arrive at a governance model of civil-contractor-military relations adapted to the contemporary provision of military force. Next to the elucidation of democratic governance structures of 21st century armed forces, the results of this analysis contribute to the normative discussion surrounding the use of PMCs.
