    Abstract

Best understood as part of the broader discourse on the knowledge economy and the role of urban and regional agglomerations in processes of innovation, the institutionalization of these discourses in European, national and local government policies and strategies has led to substantial investments 'on the ground' aimed at realizing this knowledge economy. One important type of project revolves around the construction of university buildings and campuses and the last decade in particular has seen extensive university planning and building activity around the world. It remains to be seen if the economic crisis will have much of an impact on this building boom; so far no decline is in sight.
