Abstract

The Federal Committee of Control and Evaluation regarding Euthanasia ("committee") was instituted according to the law on euthanasia. Sixteen members (and 16 deputy members) are on the committee, which consists of 8 physicians, 4 health providers and 4 lawyers. The main task of the committee is to evaluate if the registered cases of euthanasia (on a registration document devised by the committee) were carried out according to the legal regulations and procedural requirements. As such, the committee may be considered as a buffer between doctors and the court. Only if there is any doubt within the two-third majority, the questionable file will be referred to the attorney. Every two years, the committee is also expected to report statistical data and to formulate recommendations for a possible improvement of the legislation on euthanasia and/or its application.
