Abstract

As a consequence of some demographic, market and socio-cultural mega trends, many of the traditional sports clubs and their departments have lost their fit with the (direct) environment and are coping with some substantial challenges and serious threats (De Knop, et al., 1996; De Knop, et al., 2000). For instance, beside the more demanding club members, there is also an obvious request for a more contemporary approach of management coming from supporting and controlling stakeholders like private sponsors and subsidising bodies. To come along with this (strategic) problem, these traditional sports organisations have to reflect about their future position in the sports market and how they can close the growing gap between this (changed) internal and external context. Therefore, the systematic introduction of Total Quality Management can be pushed forward as a potential solution.
The main objective is to find out how the principals of Total Quality Management (TQM) can be applied in the traditional sport system in order to improve the quality and effectiveness of those (service) systems as well as to recover the fit with the (task) environment. More precisely, it is our aim to present a framework to analyse and improve the management of (service) processes in (traditionally organised) sports clubs and youth academies in particular.
